In an effort to cut down on the millions of carryout bags used each year, Colorado has a new state law in effect on Jan. 1, 2023, requiring businesses to charge you a 10 cent fee to take your purchases in a single-use plastic or paper carryout bag. House Bill 21-1162 will come into effect through three parts, the first described above. On Jan. 1, 2024 the second phase will come in effect, banning plastic bags and polystyrene cups and containers. Finally by April 1, 2024, retailers are required to remit 60% of fees collected since Jan. 1, 2023 and on a quarterly basis thereafter. Help us make Colorado more sustainable for all and invest in bringing your own bag!
