June is Gun Violence Awareness Month. According to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) between the years of 2016 to 2021 (most recent data point) there were 5,287 deaths due to firearms among Colorado residents. The rates of deaths due to firearm injury are higher than rates of death from motor vehicle deaths, opioid overdoses, colon cancer, and influenza. That number is shocking. Especially when you consider the fact that out of those 5,287 deaths, 73.6% were due to intentional self harm/suicides. This month I will be highlighting legislation I have passed throughout my time at the legislature, critical gun violence prevention legislation Colorado has spearheaded, resources available, and more!
